The former Hokkkaido Government office building, also named as "Red Brick," was constructed in 1888 as the base for the government administration. This American neo-baroque style structure was built in local materials. It was claimed as one of the tallest and largest buildings of that time. The current structure is a rebuit from the devastated fire in 1911.
