怪談「耳なし芳一(沒有耳朵的芳一)」「雪女」「むじな(貉)」等著作的作者小泉八雲(Koizumi Yakumo，1850-1904年)是一名英國人，原名Lafcadio Hearn，於明治24年(1891年)從島根縣松江中學轉到熊本大學的前身－第五高等中學擔任英語教師，而這間就是他來到熊本縣第一年所居住的家宅。
