建於1983年，其主要目的是保存，研究及宣傳希臘海運歷史和傳統價值觀．創始人為米島人George M. Drakopoulos ，獲取了The Athens Academy Award, The World Ship Trust's Award for Individual Achievement. 

博物館展覽了由前邁諾安時期到二十世紀初船舶的型號、版畫、古文物、付運文件、航海工具設備以及古代硬幣。此外，館內的圖書館收藏了五千卷古代手稿。
