衛城是雅高156米，可從雅典市的任何地方都能夠看到的一顆明珠，在希臘文中，akros/akron是邊或極的意思，而polis則是城，因此Acropolis意指「最高的城」。 衛城山頂薈萃著古希臘文化最傑出的作品，衛城也因為這些博物館而聞名世界。 其中最為人所熟知的是帕特農神廟（又稱雅典娜神廟）、衛城門口，當然少不了老衛城博物館及新衛城博物館，收藏著衛城挖掘出的各種雕塑以及其它的文物。 衛城作為雅典其中一個最高的地方，遊客更可以從這裡俯瞰整個雅典城，十分美麗。
