西茶屋街前身西之郭，是由加賀藩第12代藩主前田齊廣於文政3年(1820年)授權設立的兩個藝伎區之一，另一個為東之郭(現今東茶屋街)，兩者再加上主計町並稱金澤市的三大茶屋街。現在茶屋街大多數建築物內都經營著料理店，而且經常有現役的藝伎到這裡留連。
